Associate Character Modeler
Makeshift Software Inc. | Remote (3–6 months) → Hybrid On-Site Full-Time About Hexborn Hexborn is our upcoming dark fantasy action RPG — a brutal blend of hack-and-slash combat, deep dungeon crawling, guild progression, and player-driven rivalry set in a world consumed by an ever-expanding corruption known as the Graveglass Blight. Players rise from an unknown mage into the leader of a legendary guild, mastering arcane combat, recruiting allies, forging relics, and descending into cursed ruins and large-scale raids to uncover the truth behind their rare ability to fly. The demo is live now on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4810690/Hexborn_Demo/ We're in the midst of an art direction shift — moving from a strongly stylized anime aesthetic into a blend of photorealism and anime influence. We're looking for a character modeler early in their career who's ready to learn that new visual identity alongside our senior team, not just execute a fixed style guide from day one. The Role We're looking for an Associate Character Modeler to help build the heroes, allies, and enemies that populate Hexborn. You'll take concept art and direction from senior character artists and turn it into rigged, production-ready 3D models — working under guidance at first, and growing into greater ownership as you get comfortable with our pipeline and hybrid stylized/photorealistic aesthetic. This is a hands-on production role with real mentorship built in. You won't be defining direction on your own from day one — you'll pair closely with senior character artists and riggers, get regular feedback, and take on more independent scope as your familiarity with our pipeline grows. What You'll Do Model 3D characters — heroes, guild allies, and enemies — from concept art through to final, game-ready assets, under the direction of senior character artists Support both stylized and photorealistic character work as Hexborn transitions toward its blended anime/photorealism look (see reference examples below) Translate 2D concept art into rigged 3D models , with senior review and feedback Learn to build clean, animator-friendly control rigs , starting with established templates and growing toward independent rig-building Collaborate with concept artists, animators, and riggers to maintain visual and technical consistency across the character roster Help document character pipeline standards as our art direction evolves What You'll Need Some professional or strong portfolio-level experience with Blender, 3DS Max, or Maya (Blender preferred) A portfolio demonstrating character modeling fundamentals — anatomy, topology, and silhouette Willingness to work across both stylized and photorealistic character styles as our art direction evolves Basic experience with rigging concepts , even if not yet building production-ready control rigs independently Eagerness to learn from senior character artists and grow within a structured production pipeline Nice to have: Basic Python scripting experience for Blender plugins/tools Our Current Direction We're actively pivoting from a strongly stylized anime style toward a blend of photorealism and anime aesthetics. For a sense of the target look: Reference 1 Reference 2 Perks & Tools MOVE AI markerless motion capture + Z CAM E2-M4 camera capture system Faceware Mark IV mocap helmets for facial performance capture Industry-grade workstation, built to spec: see our standard build Remote-first for the first 3–6 months, transitioning to hybrid on-site thereafter Work Arrangement We'll start fully remote for a 3–6 month grace period while you ramp up and get embedded with the team, then transition to a hybrid on-site schedule.
