BATTERY MATERIALS ENGINEER
RefinyX AB is building the world’s most efficient critical materials recovery platform for sovereign Western supply chains. We are now looking to hire a Battery Materials Engineer at the Refinyx R&D facility in Västerås, Sweden. The job. You develop battery materials on three fronts: battery-grade iron phosphate, NMC pCAM and LFP CAM, from both recycled and virgin feeds. Spray pyrolysis is at the centre of your work. You set up our lab-scale spray pyrolysis system and run it to produce battery material. With our team lead, you make material at lab and pilot scale, prepare customer samples, and learn scale-up from the team that takes our processes to commercial scale. Together with QC, every material is characterized by XRD, SEM, ICP, BET, TD and PSD. You run the experiments, analyze the results, propose the next DoE together with the team lead and execute it on time. Electrochemical performance evaluation, for example in coin cells, runs with QC and our partners: you specify the test plan for cycle life and rate capability and interpret the results. With our AI partners you build the datasets behind predictive models for battery materials, and you contribute to patents on our processes. You also meet customers. The team lead agrees specifications with clients. You support with data and stay in technical contact through validation. You work directly with three groups. The first is our battery materials team lead, a well-known expert in the field. The second is our in-house QC expert, who developed the analytical methods for this application and built QC at refinery. The third is our industrialization team, the people who built it. Your week. Most of it at Loophouse in Västerås: in the lab and on the pilot line, with QC, and on the data and the next DoE. The rest with customers and partners. Your first year. By three months, our lab scale spray pyrolysis system is set up and running under your lead, the first LFP CAM and precursor samples are produced, characterized, and evaluated with QC and our partners, and the bench scale reactors for iron phosphate and NMC pCAM are running with you as a hands on operator. By six months, spray pyrolysis produces material reproducibly against agreed targets, you take part in commissioning the battery materials pilot line, and samples of battery grade iron phosphate and NMC pCAM go to customers with QC and partner data you have interpreted. By twelve months, you have taken spray pyrolysis from the lab scale setup to a pilot scale setup together with our industrialization team and partners, it produces LFP CAM at pilot scale, and you support the larger sample batches for customers. What you must bring. Three things matter most. First, you have set up a lab scale spray pyrolysis system yourself and run it to produce battery material, and you can show us. Second, you understand the process: precursor solution chemistry, atomization (ultrasonic or nozzle), temperature profile, carrier gas and residence time, and how they control particle size, morphology and phase, including any post treatment such as annealing or carbon coating. Third, you know how the resulting battery material is evaluated: chemical and physical analysis (for example XRD, SEM, ICP, PSD and BET) and electrochemical performance in coin cells (cycle life and rate capability). The evaluation itself is carried out with our internal QC team and partners, so what matters is that you can specify the right tests, read the results critically and link them back to your process parameters. What else you bring. You hold an MSc or PhD in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, energy engineering, metallurgy or a related field, with at least two years of hands on battery materials research (graduate research years count). Experience with LFP or other olivine type cathodes, working knowledge of iron phosphate or NMC pCAM, and other synthesis routes such as precipitation, hydrothermal, solid state or spray drying are a strong plus. So are hands on coin cell assembly and testing, EIS, GITT or CV, process simulation, machine learning, and patents or peer reviewed publications. Industrial scale up experience is not required; you learn it here from the people who built a refinery. We expect you to be AI native in how you work, or eager to become so, because this is the company we are building. You work comfortably in English; Swedish is not required. Location. The role is based at the Refinyx R&D facility, Nätverksgränd 5, 721 36 Västerås. The pilot line, the laboratories, and the team sit on that site. Travel is to customer sites and partner laboratories, driven by business need. The Culture. This is your company. Everyone at Refinyx holds equity, so everyone sees the plan, the cash and the risks. In your first interview we will tell you where this company could fail. You can tell a founder “this will not work” and get a thank you, not a problem. We are a small team with no managers in between. We simulate before we build. Whatever we build has to run safely, every day, for twenty years. We are looking for friends and colleagues to join the Refinyx family and build beyond it. What we offer. A good salary, paid on time. A piece of the company, like everyone else here. Colleagues who have scaled a plant, commissioned it and run it. Loophouse, our 1,200 m² pilot plant and lab in Västerås, where you can test an idea in weeks. Permanent employment on Swedish terms. How to apply. Send your CV and a cover letter to info@refinyx.com with the role title (Battery Materials Engineer) in the subject line. Tell us what you have built and why you want to be part of this. One page is plenty. We read every letter ourselves and reply within ten working days.
