Head of Engineering

ABOUT THE ROLE This is a player-coach Head of Engineering role at an early-stage B2B SaaS company in the construction technology and AI space. You will work directly with the founding team to own the full engineering roadmap and technical direction, while remaining hands-on alongside a team of five senior engineers. The role is central to scaling the platform from its current foundation to enterprise-grade reliability and capability. WHAT YOU'LL DO - Own technical direction and roadmap, covering infrastructure choices, architecture evolution, code quality standards, and team processes. - Drive the technical vision for core platform capabilities including data lineage, artifact abstractions, document processing at scale, AI evaluation pipelines, and semantic search. - Work hands-on architecting and implementing complex features alongside the engineering team. - Make foundational decisions across the AI and full-stack tech stack: TypeScript, Fastify, Python, Postgres, AWS, and OpenAI integrations. - Hire, mentor, and develop a small senior engineering team, defining hiring standards and practices that scale. - Foster a high-feedback, low-ego engineering culture where ownership and growth are the norm. - Partner directly with founders on product-engineering strategy and represent engineering in investor and customer conversations. WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR - Around 10 years of B2B SaaS full-stack development experience, including enterprise contexts. - Proven track record scaling systems across multiple infrastructure iterations, with hard-won perspective on what breaks at scale. - Hands-on fluency with TypeScript, modern web frameworks, and backend API design. - Experience architecting data pipelines, document processing systems, or similar data-intensive platforms. - Solid cloud infrastructure experience (AWS, GCP, or Azure), including databases, storage, and deployment automation. - Experience integrating AI/ML systems into production applications or evaluating ML model performance. - Significant engineering leadership experience, ideally having helped scale a B2B SaaS company from very early stage. - Exposure to engineering excellence at a strong early-stage or growth-stage startup, with the drive that comes with it. - Ex-founder or entrepreneurial background is a meaningful plus. - Python experience for backend services or data processing is a bonus. - Familiarity with observability and monitoring tooling (such as Datadog or similar) is a plus. - Fluent in English, written and spoken, with strong communication skills across technical and non-technical audiences. COMPENSATION & BENEFITS Salary range: 145,000 to 210,000 EUR annually. No visa sponsorship is available for this role. LOCATION Full-time, on-site in Berlin, Germany (5 days per week). Candidates must be based in Berlin or willing to relocate.
