Master's thesis: Migration and systems transformation
Background Countries around the world will face increasing migration pressure as climate change will displace people at the same time as several countries deal with aging populations. In Sweden, several industries site shortages in key professions as a key barrier to increased growth and competitiveness. In most countries, however, policy debates tend to focus on whether migration policies should be restrictive or liberal, with less focus on the how of an effective migration system that works well for both migrants and destination countries. In Sweden, existing initiatives to create a more constructive migration system are often fragmented, or address only part of the system, thereby undermining their likelihood of transforming the system as a whole. At RISE, we have knowledge and experience of theories and methods for systems transformation in areas such as climate change – an area that also requires transformation of large scale, complex systems to address the issues at hand. We are now interested in applying this knowledge and experience to the area of migration, to see what the work of facilitating transformation of migration systems might look like. Key Responsibilities We welcome students to develop their own research questions and perspectives. The exact focus of the thesis will be shaped together with us based on your interests, competencies, and academic background. A thesis might be built around any combination of building blocks such as: A review and synthesis of literature on systems transformation, transition management, migration systems and migration infrastructure Mapping the existing migration ecosystem in Sweden, including existing initiatives by and/or aimed at actors in this ecosystem Interviews with key stakeholders in the Swedish migration ecosystem Synthesis of key lessons and insights from RISE’s existing work facilitating systems transformation Workshopping and prototyping a platform for ecosystem orchestration and systems transformation together with key stakeholders in the Swedish innovation ecosystem and the Swedish migration system Qualifications We welcome Master’s students with interdisciplinary perspectives. Relevant backgrounds include Spatial Planning and Sustainability, Political Science, Management, Business Development and Internationalisation, Economics, and Human Geography (kulturgeografi). Students from other disciplines with an interest in systems thinking and systems transformation are also encouraged to apply. Terms Length of project: 30hp / one semester Location: the majority of the work can be done remotely in collaboration with RISE colleagues located primarily in Umeå, but also Stockholm and Gothenburg, and we welcome applicants from all universities in Sweden. Travel is expected, in particular to Umeå, Stockholm and Gothenburg. Financial support: 10 000 SEK for travel and other expenses, after the assignement is completed. Lead supervisor will be Per Lindahl. Welcome with your application! For more information, please contact the supervisor Per Lindahl at per.lindahl@ri.se . The last application date is Januari 31st.
