Optical Engineer

An innovative international technology company, active in advanced imaging and high-precision equipment, is looking for an experienced Optical Engineer to strengthen its R&D team. You will contribute to the development of high-end optical systems used in industrial production environments. Work locations: West Flanders (Belgium) and Southwest Germany (with regular presence in Belgium required). Key Responsibilities Design and develop advanced optical systems in collaboration with project leaders, product managers, and a multidisciplinary R&D team Create and optimize optical designs using simulation tools (e.g. Zemax) and work closely with CAD engineers for mechanical integration Work with a wide range of optical components such as lenses, mirrors, fiber lasers, and LEDs Contribute to high-precision systems operating at (sub)micrometer level, in close collaboration with mechanical, electronic, and software teams Build and validate optical test setups, prototypes, and subassemblies, and ensure knowledge transfer towards production and service teams Support the sourcing and selection of specialized optical components together with procurement Drive continuous improvement of system performance based on feedback from production and field service Report to the R&D leadership team Your profile Master’s degree in optics, photonics, applied physics, or equivalent through experience Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in optical system design Strong theoretical and practical understanding of optics; experience with optical design software (e.g. Zemax) is essential Programming skills (e.g. Matlab or similar) are a plus Hands-on, structured, and able to work both independently and in a team Creative problem solver with a multidisciplinary mindset Fluent in English; additional languages are a plus Stress-resistant, proactive, and motivated
